What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that’s all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you’ll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

At the moment, this role is focused on:

  • Coaching and Leadership: You’ll lead a team of 5 Product Designers, providing individual coaching, feedback, and guidance to support their growth and development.
  • Vision and Strategy: You’ll define the design vision, strategy, and roadmap for the Discovery Group, collaborating with senior stakeholders. Your clear communication will simplify complex concepts and create clarity.
  • Scaling the Product Design team: You’ll plan for future design resourcing needs within your team.
  • Shaping and establishing design processes: By driving design best practices, you’ll enable more significant impact and efficiency across the team.
  • Prioritisation: You’ll collaborate with Product Managers and Engineering Leads to ensure that the team prioritises the most valuable features. You’ll take a broad, conceptual view and ensure that we are delivering the most impact.
  • Research: You’ll support teams as they dive into competitors, trends, patterns, best practices, UX design inspiration, and user and business insights.
  • Partnering with leadership: You’ll play a key role in shaping the strategy and goals of the supergroup and Product Design specialty, bringing your innovative ideas to enhance our collective craft and impact.

 

You’re probably a match if you have

  • End-to-end Product Design experience: You have 8-10 years of experience as a Product Designer, Interaction Designer, or Researcher. Experience in leading projects within Discovery (Search, Recommendations, Marketplace) or Applied AI (experimentation, computer vision, NLP) is a plus!
  • Leadership experience: You have 3+ years of experience managing a team of Product Designers and you are dedicated to nurturing the development and growth of your team members.
  • Technical collaboration experience: You’ve collaborated closely with engineers and data scientists to integrate machine learning and other technologies essential for enhancing search, recommendations, and applied AI experiences.
  • Effective communication skills: You create clarity through your communication by making complex things simple. You can confidently present your ideas and tell a compelling story to the broader team.
  • A data driven approach: You leverage both quantitative and qualitative data to craft beautiful experiences.
  • Experience working in global markets: You have a keen understanding of designing for different languages and cultures.
  • Experience working alongside content creators: You love collaborating with graphic designers, videographers, and photographers.
