Role Description
As an Associate State Product Manager, you will be responsible for driving profitable growth across multiple assigned states by developing the annual business plan, as well as setting and implementing the strategy to achieve the business plan goals.
- Engage with both internal and external stakeholders in product planning and management discussions to ensure that strategic objectives are met.
- Oversee the successful rollout of new products and countrywide initiatives in assigned markets.
- Work closely with the Pricing teams to ensure that rate actions are thoroughly and comprehensively planned.
- Responsible for the profitability of the products, as well as the drivers of premium growth, such as close ratio, retention, and average premium.
- Efficiently implement product changes that drive purposeful growth.
Your work includes:
- Strategizing, building, and executing product plans for assigned markets, ensuring compliance.
- Consulting VP State Product to drive clarity of business strategies and operating objectives for products in assigned states.
- Influencing overall strategy and business plans for associated clubs, defining where, how, and when to compete.
- Developing product specifics for assigned markets, covering design, pricing, policy development, compliance, and operational planning/budget.
- Working closely with partner clubs and distribution partners to ensure product performance, proper execution, and strategic product distribution.
- Utilizing advanced knowledge of current products and future enhancements to make recommendations to the Product Strategy and Development team.
- Using sound analysis to adapt countrywide initiatives to thrive in local markets and develop appropriate product/underwriting modifications.
- Developing, implementing, and managing tactical plans in support of sales strategies for all personal lines insurance products in territory.
- Collaborating with a team of analyst(s) and Product Specialists, empowering them and holding them accountable.
- Overseeing and coordinating product development, delivery, and analysis for assigned markets.
- Monitoring all aspects of product performance, including close ratio, retention, quality of the book of business, and distribution channel satisfaction.
- Reviewing claims trends to achieve loss ratio targets.
- Maintaining market-specific competitive intelligence and trend analyses.
- Staying abreast of competitor strategies and activities as well as regulatory/legislative processes.
- Ensuring alignment within and across functions and communicating results throughout the organization.
- Driving strategy and advocating for state-specific needs, partnering on rate and non-rate action to address indication.
- Proactively building relationships with DOIs and creating productive lines of communication for successful product filings.
- Some travel required for high impact relationship building opportunities with partners.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related area (finance, marketing, business, or a related field) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 10+ years of related work experience with 5+ years of relevant work experience in the personal lines P&C insurance industry.
- Prior experience related to state product management in analytical, product specialist, or market generation roles.
- Advanced strategic and business acumen.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to create and deliver effective presentations.
- Ability to influence without direct authority.
- Thorough knowledge of the P&C insurance industry, products, marketplace, competitive landscape, and pricing.
- In-depth product management expertise.
- Advanced understanding of financial drivers of profitability and a proven ability to develop and sustain profitability-based product and marketing strategies.
- Consultative leadership orientation.
- Advanced negotiation skills and the ability to influence seasoned and senior-level internal and external parties.
- Coaches and mentors more junior team members.
- Advanced knowledge and proficiency in change management concepts and practices.
Requirements
- BA/BS or equivalent work experience.
- 10 years of related work experience with typically 5+ years being in the personal lines P&C industry.
- Prior experience in state product management roles (e.g., analyst, specialist, market generation consultant) or other related functions (e.g., pricing, product strategy and development, data science).
