The Position:
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mobile Engineer with a focus on Reliability to join our team of DevOps and Quality Engineers. You will play a pivotal role in driving and implementing best practices for observability, scalability, recoverability, etc. across our iOS and Android products. This role requires working with programming languages such as Swift or Kotlin. You will be at the intersection of platform and application-level development, offering a unique opportunity to impact the entire organization by integrating cloud infrastructure, software development, and operations expertise.
In this role, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, product managers, and infrastructure specialists to ensure that our systems are designed and built for reliability from the ground up. Your work will directly contribute to enhancing the developer experience by creating seamless, automated processes for monitoring, alerting, and responding to system issues. As our systems grow in complexity, your expertise will be crucial in scaling our observability practices and ensuring that we maintain high standards of performance and availability.
Why is this not just a Site Reliability Engineer role?
We expect this position to be much more hands on in the code base, directly pairing with developers. This position will be making changes directly to the main code base to help build shared libraries and frameworks to make it easier for product developers to build reliable code as well as developing separate tools to help monitor the system. We felt like this role aligns more as a software engineer within our platform group more so than a separate role entirely.
What You’ll Do:
Lead efforts to establish clear visibility into how systems perform in production, using observability tools like Datadog and OpenTelemetry (Otel).
Provide actionable feedback and recommendations to other engineering teams based on real-time data and insights.
Work closely with feature development teams to establish Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Indicators (SLIs).
Work with teams to develop supportive tools to help test code and measure performance, examine memory usage and investigate app instability.
Architect, design, and maintain robust observability tools and frameworks tailored to our codebases and infrastructure.
Use Datadog, OpenTelemetry, and other industry-standard tools to ensure comprehensive monitoring, logging, and tracing for mobile applications (iOS and Android). Your goal will be to enable quick detection and resolution of incidents and to foster a proactive approach to system health and performance.
Share your expertise by mentoring and training engineers on reliability tactics. This will include creating comprehensive documentation, conducting one-on-one sessions, and leading group training workshops. Your mentorship will empower teams to implement and maintain best practices for observability across the organization.
What You’ll Bring:
Proven experience in developing and optimizing software, preferably with a background in mobile development using Swift and/or Kotlin.
Extensive experience in designing and implementing observability tools and frameworks, particularly using Datadog, OpenTelemetry (Otel), and other related technologies. You should be well-versed in creating monitoring, logging, and tracing solutions that provide deep insights into system performance.
Deep understanding of reliability metrics, with the ability to apply them effectively in production systems. You should be comfortable defining and working with metrics that drive SLOs and SLIs, ensuring that they reflect the memory usage, performance and resilience of mobile and backend applications.
A passion for continuous learning and teaching, with experience mentoring engineers across team boundaries in SRE and observability best practices. Your influence will extend beyond the immediate team, fostering a culture of reliability and transparency across the engineering organization.
