About the Role
We are seeking a highly creative and motivated 2D Digital Artist Intern to join our team for a 4 month internship focused entirely on merchandise design. Please note that this is strictly a 2D art role and does not involve game art, 3D modeling, or animation. Instead, you will be designing compelling, print-ready 2D artwork for a variety of physical products, including apparel, accessories, posters, and lifestyle merchandise.
This internship is designed to give emerging 2D artists hands-on experience in the commercial art world, teaching you how to take a digital concept and optimize it for real-world physical manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- 2D Merchandise Illustration: Conceptualize, sketch, and finalize high-quality 2D digital artwork tailored specifically for merchandise (e.g., t-shirts, hoodies, stickers, mugs, and prints).
- Print Preparation: Learn and apply best practices for print production, including formatting 2D artwork for CMYK, managing DPI/resolutions, and setting up proper bleed lines and color profiles.
- Typography & Graphic Elements: Integrate text, logos, and graphic elements into 2D illustrations to create cohesive and striking apparel designs.
- Brand Collaboration: Work closely with the creative team to ensure all designs align with the brand’s visual identity and target audience.
- Asset Adaptation: Modify and optimize existing 2D artwork to fit various product dimensions and material constraints.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A strong digital portfolio demonstrating skills strictly in 2D illustration, graphic design, and typography. _(Prior merchandise or apparel design examples are a huge plus)._
- Proficiency in industry-standard 2D digital art software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, or Clip Studio Paint).
- A solid understanding of color theory, composition, and visual hierarchy within a 2D space.
- Excellent communication skills and openness to receiving and implementing constructive feedback.
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple design tasks.
What You Will Gain
While this is an unpaid internship, we are committed to providing a rich educational experience to help you launch your career in commercial art:
- Real-World Portfolio Pieces: See your 2D designs taken from raw sketches to finalized, commercially viable merchandise mockups.
- Professional Reference: A formal letter of recommendation and certificate of completion at the end of the 4-month program.
Source: Wellfound.
